How common are septic systems in the US?

The EPA's published figure is: "More than one in five households in the U.S. depend on individual septic (decentralized) systems or small community cluster systems to treat their wastewater." That is more than 20% of occupied US housing units.

These systems are concentrated in "suburban and rural locations not served by a public (centralized) sewer system," in the EPA's own words. Densely urbanized areas are almost universally on public sewer; septic use rises with distance from urban centers and with lower population density.

Septic systems vs private wells: related but not the same

Septic systems handle wastewater disposal (what leaves the house). Private wells handle water supply (what comes in). The EPA tracks them through different programs and they are measured by different surveys:

  • Wastewater (septic): tracked by the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, Table B25048 "Sewage Disposal." Available at data.census.gov by state and county.
  • Water supply (wells): tracked by USGS water-use estimates (published every 5 years) and by EPA's Safe Drinking Water programs. About 10% of Americans use private wells, per EPA.

Many rural households use both a private well and a septic system, because neither public water nor public sewer reaches their property. But the two are not always paired. A home can be on a public water line while still having a septic system, and vice versa.

The USGS 2015 water-use estimates found that ~42.5 million people (about 13% of the population at the time) used self-supplied groundwater for domestic water. The states with the highest share of self-supplied water withdrawals in 2015 were Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, Florida, and North Carolina, each accounting for roughly 5 to 6% of total US self-supplied domestic withdrawals. These are water supply figures, not wastewater figures, and should not be read as septic prevalence data.

How often do septic systems need service?

The EPA publishes maintenance benchmarks for household septic systems. These are the confirmed figures:

The EPA notes that actual pumping frequency depends on four factors: number of people in the household, total wastewater generated, the volume of solids in the wastewater, and the size of the septic tank. A household with a garbage disposal will generally need to pump more often. Average indoor water use is roughly 70 gallons per person per day, per EPA; reducing water use directly reduces the load on the system.

  • Public sewer
